Concept of Work

This Career Group provides career tracks for psychologists that provide the full range of psychological evaluation, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment services to clients. Employees perform responsibilities ranging from entry-level psychological services to management. Some employees may be required to have an advanced degree or licensure.

Roles Comprising This Group

These roles describe the collective characteristics of the work performed by employees in the Psychological Services Career Group. The roles define the typical career paths for employees who pursue careers as psychologists.

Although all of these occupations are psychologists, each warrants a separate career track. Each of these career paths requires different knowledge, skills, and abilities and may not lead to the other for career progression. However, a role for each of these occupations represents different levels of work, or career progression. Career paths may exist within a single role, extend to other roles in this Career Group, or to roles in other occupationally related Career Group.

These roles are distinguished based upon the Compensable Factors of Complexity, Results, and Accountability and are used for position classification. These factors should be used for classification and compensation analysis. Recruitment and selection standards must be based on knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated in the Employee Work Profile.

Psychologist I

The Psychologist I role provides career tracks for psychologists that are primarily devoted to conducting psychological assessments, administering, scoring and interpreting a variety of psychological tests and providing treatment to clients using didactic, psychotherapeutic and behavioral techniques and principles.

Psychologist I

COMPLEXITY

  • Work requires the administration and interpretation of a variety of psychological tests and the conduct of psychological assessments and/or evaluations.
  • Applies knowledge of psychological assessments and/or evaluations and tests and behavior modification techniques and principles.
  • Applies knowledge of diagnostic categories and treatment strategies.

RESULTS

  • Effective performance permits accurate diagnosis and treatment, allowing clients to enhance their psychological well being.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Exercises independent judgment within policy parameters.
  • Guidance is received regarding inconclusive tests or assessments.
  • All services are typically provided under the supervision of a licensed psychologist as required by their specific area of practice.

 

Psychologist II

The Psychologist II role provides career tracks for advanced-level psychologists that deliver a variety of comprehensive psychological/neuropsychological services to clients. Services include diagnosis, treatment planning and intervention, on-going therapy, screening, diagnostic testing, evaluation, and may supervise subordinate psychologists.

COMPLEXITY

  • Work requires knowledge of a variety of psychological interventions such as psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, group therapy and program development and monitoring.
  • Work requires extensive knowledge of clinical practices.
  • May require court testimony as expert witnesses.
  • May require expertise in areas requiring advanced degree and/or licensure.
  • May be licensed to independently practice psychology.

RESULTS

  • Effective performance permits accurate diagnosis and treatment allowing clients to enhance their psychological well being.
  • Decisions may affect systems beyond the immediate clinical area such as the legal system or the overall provision of psychological/neuropsychological services.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Exercises independent judgment regarding individual client care.
  • Assumes leadership role in the mentoring and development of interns, postdoctoral fellows, or other educational or research affiliates.
  • May serve as lead service provider, project team leader, or may supervise less experienced psychologists.

The Psychologist III role provides career tracks for psychologists that provide clinical and administrative supervision to staff in caseload management, resource allocation, clinical decisions, crisis intervention, and on-going program planning.

Psychologist III

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies knowledge and experience in directing, evaluating, integrating, and coordinating psychological/neuropsycho-logical services.
  • Work may require advanced degree and/or licensure.

RESULTS

  • Effective decisions facilitate successful delivery and timing of services and treatment.
  • Decisions affect on-going program planning and general management.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Provides leadership in maintenance of clinical quality assurance.
  • Provides clinical direction and supervision to subordinate personnel.
  • Exercises independent judgment regarding client care and program services.
  • Assumes responsibility for unlicensed subordinate staff.

 

The Psychology Manager role is for managers that are responsible for long-range activities associated with administering and directing the design and delivery of comprehensive psychological services programs.

COMPLEXITY

  • Applies programmatic and administrative knowledge.
  • Applies knowledge of management practices and principles.
  • Work may require advanced degree and/or licensure.

RESULTS

  • Effective program management promotes successful therapeutic outcomes.
  • Actions impact efficient and effective allocation of resources and contribute to a positive community image.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Responsible for policy development, quality assurance, and supervision of professional psychology staff.
  • Determines overall direction of comprehensive psychological services programs.
  • May serve as an expert consultant to public and private agencies.
